We held our first, and hopefully annual, summer camp on Koh Lao for the poorest of the poor Mokan (ethnic Sea Gypsy) children. The camp brought together two groups of Mokan children whose education we are sponsoring in their home villages, one group from mainland villages in Phang Nga Province, the other from the island of Koh Lao, located 30 minutes by boat from mainland in Raynong Province. Although mainland and island children have different outlooks, they share a common language and culture, and taught each other a great deal during 7 days of intense playing, discovering and sharing.
