Koh Lao - October '09

The ethnic Mokans living on the island of Kao Lao in Ranong Province are among the poorest people we have encountered in all our years of outreach. The adult literacy rate is zero; the infant and children mortality rate is extremely high. Our outreach efforts in Kao Lao include a daycare center and Mercy Preschool for 40 children; Primary School sponsorships for 50 children (which will continue when the children enter secondary school); and the villages' first health clinic, and several community-building projects. To learn more, please read Father Joe's article about this village titled, "The Old Man & the Sea & His Granddaughter." Photos, all taken on a typical day in Koh Lao, by Chawalit Kumsatok.
