Annual Report 2018

Before entering one of our class rooms, we politely ask permission from the children and of course their teachers, but the children first. Once permission given, we take off our shoes, because each class room is a sacred place – a place of learn

The Lost Scavenger

15 May 2018

From the second floor window of their flat, Pretty Molly sees her slum scavenger husband returning from a day of foraging. Her snippy stray mongrel barks excitedly as Pretty Molly begins shouting out the window to him.
He got to the Slaughter House maybe a month before she did. She: Ms Teacher. Uncle (although he wasn't "Uncle-old," but with his thick glasses, just kinda looked like you should call him "Uncle") Teacher Gimp. Calling him Gimp didn't seem offensive, although maybe it was, but the kids he taught for months and years in the Slaughter House Slum accepted him for what he was: a gimp, with thick glasses, virtues, and warts and wrinkles, all wrapped up together.
This is what it is all about. The most special day of the year - we are proud, humble and truly grateful for being part of this day - Graduation Day at Mercy preschool. 448 amazing children, 4 Mercy children and 444 children from the slum communities - the next generation full of joy, happiness and exitement to continue their education.
