Education

When Father Joe and Sister Maria opened their first slum kindergarten in 1973, their dream was – and still is – that every poor child goes to school.

Almost fifty years later…

Tens of thousands of slum children have graduated from our Mercy Schools.

Thousands more of the very poorest children have received education sponsorships and outreach support, from kindergarten through secondary school and vocational college and university.

To ensure that every poor child, no matter what the circumstances, has a chance to go to school and learn and play with other children, we opened the Janusz Korczak School for Street Children in 2004.

In recent years, we have been educating the poorest Mokan children in Ranong Provinces - the first generation in their families ever to learn to read and write.

We still tell every child we meet on the street – every rag-picker’s kid, every kid living under a bridge, every kid we see selling garlands or washing windshields in city traffic – “Go to school! Go to school! We’ll help you. Just go to school!”

School is the only chance poor kids get.
